The thing I love about my work is that I never know who is going to book in to see me with what problem.
The problems vary from depression, anxiety, can’t get to sleep, can’t stay asleep, low self-esteem, being bullied, relationship problems and parenting – hopefully, not all together!!
As an example, I recently consulted with a 10-year-old boy who wanted to end his life because he found himself in a situation he didn’t have the knowledge to change and just wanted the emotional pain to end. Luckily, he had a great relationship with his parents and told them about how he felt.
All of us can find ourself in a situation where we feel there is no solution. We start dwelling on the problem and emotionally begin to crash.
Sometimes we don’t even know the problem. We simply feel emotionally low and are unable to get ourselves out. This drives us ‘nuts’ as there appears to be no reason for why we should be feeling down. This then adds another layer to the problem.
Some will say it’s ‘fate’ we feel depressed, others will call it bad luck, a few blame a higher power like God, others accept it as their lot and do nothing while some believe there is a cause.
Dealing with mental health issues is a bit like dealing with a flat tyre. You can ignore it and hope the problem disappears, keep pumping it up or look for the cause and deal with that.
For me, the latter is the easiest and delivers the best outcome.
For the 10-year-old boy, we identified the cause of why he wanted to end his life and then gave him (and his parents) the skills on how to deal with it.
I consult with many clients who say they feel depressed yet have no idea as to why.
Once I explain what depression is and the many causes, they begin to get answers on why they feel emotionally down.
When a client commented “More should be taught about this topic”, it got me thinking. I decided put together an eBook to help my clients out. Then I thought, “Why stop there? Why not make it available to everyone?”
