You may wonder what is happening to you.
You get these scary feelings and you wonder what is causing them.
As an example, “Don” was about to go on air at a radio station. He was being interviewed by an experienced announcer about a sensitive topic.
As the interview began, Don started to sweat and his hands trembled. His voice was shaky. The announcer asked if he was OK and he replied “Yes”.
Two minutes into the interview Don had a mental blank. He couldn’t think of what to say and he became embarrassed. The shaking became worse, his heart beat loudly in his chest and Don felt physically sick. He had to stop the interview.
Once outside the building, Don began to calm down.
After consulting with a doctor, he learnt he had suffered an anxiety attack.
Anxiety affects everyone in some way at some time.
Figures show 1 in 6 young Australians are currently experiencing an anxiety condition. I have had clients present as young as 7 years suffering from it. It is also estimated that over 2 million Australians will experience anxiety in a given year.
That’s a lot of people!
While anxiety can be devastating for the person, it can also be devastating for their family as they don’t know what’s going on or how to help.
Some suffer in silence while others seek medical help.
It is important to know anxiety can be overcome as it is a state of mind … and states can be changed!
Don is a good example of clients I consult with.
Most have no idea of the cause of the condition. All they know is it stops them from doing many of the things they would love to do. They end up couped up inside their home too fearful to leave. This often leads to them feeling more anxious and they may even feel depressed.
Now they have two problems to fix!
What was causing Don’s problems?
He was worried what others thought of him. He was worried people would see him as an idiot and judge him as not knowing what he was talking about.
The anxiety kept Don emotionally safe by creating an Anxiety attack so he had to leave the building and get away from being in the spotlight.
You may be able to relate to this. It is why so many people hate speaking in public.
The key to fixing any problem is to identify the cause.
For Don, it was not being able to control what others thought of him. He always assumed people would think the worst.
To be able to help the greater community, I have decided to take what I know and put it into a course.
